Motivating Your Inner Meerkat

WHY IS MOTIVATION NECESSARY IN OUR PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT?

Research from the University of Tokoyo in Japan (Or Shkoler,Takuma Kimur, and

Netanya, Israel, Organizational Psychology, 21 February 2020) advises that our world today has been described by the acronym VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous). In this rapidly changing world, organizations and individuals need to engage in continuous learning. To achieve a competitive advantage, organizations need to develop organizational learning, which can be achieved by acquiring learning individuals. From the latter’s viewpoint, it is getting more necessary for workers to learn continuously to enhance and maintain their employability. As shown in previous research, the number of people engaging in lifelong learning has significantly increased (Corrales-Herrero and Rodríguez-Prado, 2018).

Hence the importance of Motivating our Inner Meerkat.

WHY IS MOTIVATION NECESSARY EVERYWHERE ELSE?

If we are not motivated from within we don't have what it takes to keep us going in difficult circumstances.

If we are not motivated we are not wholehearted at home, at work, in our relationships with ourselves and others so life becomes dull, apathetic, and meaningless. It is a time where a sense of hopelessness and depression can set in, with lethargy at best, and at worst even suicide or all kinds of addictions to find stimulation or avoid pain.

HOW CAN A GROUP OF MEERKATS PROVIDE US WITH MOTIVATIONAL TRUTHS & TRIGGERS?

When we observe the sentinel meerkat, the one up on guard, watching out for predators so the rest of the meerkat clan can put their hnoses to the gound and source food, or take some time out to prepare and clan their den where they live, it is not because it is this meerka'ts turn or role in the group. It is because this clever meerkat knows how to find the best food and feed him or herself.

Thus, the life truth is that when we know how to take care of ourselves we are in a good position - well fed, with a 'full cup, to take care of those we care about - our team, our family, even our children.

What has this got to do with inner motivation and Motivating our Inner Meerkat?

Well, we dont know how to feed ourselves well physically, emotioally and spiritually if we dont know who we are. When we do know who we are we are motivated and more generous to be purposeful and caring.

When we are 'filled up' from within because we know how to 'feed' ourselves, then we are not like an empty cup that needs filling, we are not needy, greedy, alone and repellant. Instead we are generous, caring, and want to see other succeed.

When we don't know how to 'feed ourselves' we can become sick and dysfunctional which has an impact on our entire tribe.

The meerkat sentinel role changes depending on who has just 'fed the best' and is the one most equipped at the time. This leads to an inner motivation that breeds a leadership rich culture. The meerkats do not compete to be the sentine on guard, they take up that position when they are the one most equpped to do so.

So Motivate Your Inner Meerkat and be an engaged, ongoing learner at work and in life, someone capable of caring for family, friends and of course yourself.
